Choosing a fertilizer brand is a bit like choosing a good wine: it depends on taste and budget! I recommend starting by defining your goals: are you looking for an organic, mineral, or both approach? Then, I advise you to look at the brand's reputation, the clarity of its fertilization programs, and product availability. Brands like Biobizz or Plagron are highly regarded for their comprehensive range and ease of use, even for beginners.
That's an excellent question and the foundation for understanding fertilization! In short, organic fertilizers come from natural materials (plant or animal) and nourish the soil and its microorganisms, which takes more time. Mineral fertilizers, on the other hand, are soluble salts directly absorbable by the plant, offering fast and precise action. Finally, organo-mineral fertilizers combine the advantages of both: an organic base for soil life and mineral inputs for a more immediate effect. I often favor organic for taste and final quality, but mineral is unbeatable for performance and control.
A root stimulator is like the boost we give our plants to get a good start. Its main role is to encourage the development of a strong and dense root system. A good root system is essential because it's what absorbs water and nutrients. In practice, I use it from the beginning of growth, after sowing or cutting, to ensure better plant establishment and increased stress resistance. It's an investment that always pays off in the long run.
Each phase has its specific needs, which is why we use different fertilizers. For the growth phase, the plant needs a fertilizer rich in nitrogen (N), which promotes foliage and structural development. When the plant enters flowering, its needs change radically: it then requires a fertilizer richer in phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), essential for flower and fruit formation. This is called the NPK ratio, and it is crucial to respect it to obtain good results. Most brands, like Hesi or Bionova, offer specific ranges for each phase.
Dosing liquid fertilizer is an art that requires precision. My number one advice is to always follow the manufacturer's recommendations, usually indicated on the label or in a cultivation chart. I often start with a slightly lower dose than recommended, especially with young plants, to observe their reaction. It is crucial to mix the fertilizer thoroughly with water and to check the pH of the nutrient solution before watering. Overdosing is harder to correct than a slight deficiency, so caution is key!
In indoor cultivation, fertilizer mistakes are common, especially at the beginning. The most common is over-fertilization, often due to overzealousness, which can burn the plant's roots. Another mistake is not adjusting the pH of the nutrient solution, which prevents the plant from properly absorbing nutrients, even if they are present. Finally, I often see growers neglecting flushing at the end of flowering, which can alter the taste and quality of the final product. The key is moderation and careful observation of your plants.
Identifying a deficiency is a bit like reading tea leaves, but with experience, it becomes easier! The signs vary depending on the missing nutrient: yellowing of lower leaves can indicate a nitrogen deficiency, while leaves with necrotic or purplish edges may point to a lack of potassium or phosphorus. What I do is first check the pH of the substrate or nutrient solution, as incorrect pH is often the cause of poor assimilation. Only then do I consider a specific supplement. Don't hesitate to consult detailed guides for each type of deficiency.
Switching to flowering fertilizers is a key step! I generally start introducing flowering fertilizers as soon as the first pre-flowers appear or when I switch the light cycle to 12/12 for photoperiodic plants. It's important to make a gradual transition over one or two weeks, decreasing growth fertilizers and increasing flowering ones. This allows the plant to adapt smoothly to its new needs and avoid unnecessary stress. This is when the plant will focus its energy on flower production.
