How to choose pot size for indoor growing?

To choose the ideal pot size for indoor growing, I recommend considering the final size of your plant and its root system. Generally, for small plants or germination, 0.5 to 3-liter pots are sufficient. For medium-sized plants, I advise 5 to 15-liter pots. If you are aiming for large plants or long-term cultivation, 20-liter pots and larger will be more suitable. It is crucial to provide enough space for optimal root development.

What pot size for a 1m plant indoors?

For a plant that will reach approximately 1 meter in height indoors, I generally recommend a pot with a minimum capacity of 10 to 15 liters. This is a good baseline to ensure sufficient root development and good stability. If the plant is particularly thirsty or if you want to maximize its yield, a 20-liter pot could even be considered. The important thing is not to restrict root growth.

What's the difference between plastic, fabric, and air-pots?

There are notable differences between these types of pots. Plastic pots, like those in our Top Budget range, are economical, easy to clean, and retain moisture well. Fabric pots, on the other hand, promote better root aeration and a natural "air-pruning" phenomenon, preventing root circling; I explain their advantages in more detail in this article. Air-pots, with their perforated walls, maximize oxygenation and air-pruning of the roots, but they are often more expensive and require more frequent watering. To start on a tight budget, plastic pots are an excellent choice.

What are saucers for under pots?

Saucers are essential accessories, especially in indoor cultivation. Their main role is to collect excess drainage water that escapes from the pot's holes. This not only protects your surfaces (floor, shelves) from water damage but also prevents waste and maintains impeccable cleanliness in your growing space. I recommend always using a saucer appropriate for the size of your pot for maximum effectiveness.

Do pots need drainage holes?

Yes, absolutely! I cannot overstate the importance of drainage holes in a pot. They are essential for allowing excess water to escape, thus preventing root asphyxiation and rot. Good drainage is the key to a healthy plant. If a pot doesn't have them, I strongly advise you to drill them yourself before use.

What mistakes to avoid with pots in indoor growing?

In indoor growing, I often see a few common mistakes with pots. The first is choosing a pot that is too small, which restricts root development. The second is overwatering, often aggravated by poor drainage or the absence of holes. Also, avoid letting the plant constantly sit in stagnant water in the saucer, as this can lead to diseases. Finally, do not neglect the importance of thoroughly cleaning pots between each crop to prevent the spread of pathogens.

Square or round pots to optimize indoor space?

For optimizing space in indoor cultivation, I often recommend square pots. They allow for a more compact arrangement without wasting space on your growing surface, as they can be placed side-by-side without leaving gaps. Round pots, although very common, inevitably create empty spaces between them. If you have limited space, choosing square pots is generally more judicious.
