Unlike older HPS technologies, which consume more energy and generate a lot of heat, 800W LEDs offer an optimized light spectrum and remarkable energy efficiency.

With actual power consumption generally between 320 and 400W depending on the model, these lights deliver a PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) of 800 to 1200 µmol/m²/s at 60 cm distance. This is exactly what you need to push your plants to their full potential, whether in vegetative growth or flowering.

Why choose an 800W LED for your indoor grow

Frankly, when you compare an 800W LED to a 1000W HPS, the difference is striking. First, power consumption: where an HPS actually consumes 1000W, an 800W LED only consumes 350-400W for equivalent or even superior light output. That makes a huge difference on your electricity bill!

The light spectrum is where everything changes. 800W LEDs generally integrate full-spectrum diodes with peaks in red (660nm) and blue (450nm), plus far-red (730nm) to stimulate flowering. The quality of the diodes makes all the difference. Choose reputable brands like Samsung LM301B/H, Osram, or Bridgelux. These diodes maintain their intensity longer (50,000h minimum) and offer a more stable spectrum over time. LEDs with "no-name" diodes quickly lose efficiency.

The driver (transformer) must be dimmable and from a reputable brand: Meanwell, Inventronics, or Sosen. A good driver allows you to adjust the intensity from 10 to 100% and ensures a stable power supply without fluctuations. This is crucial for the longevity of your diodes.

For cooling, check that the LED has a sufficiently sized aluminum heat sink. Some models integrate silent fans (less than 30dB), while others rely on passive cooling. Both approaches work, but passive cooling is more reliable in the long run.
