To choose the right heater, I advise you to consider the size of your space, the specific needs of your plants, and your energy budget. For example, for a small grow box, a heating mat may suffice, while a large grow room might require a fan heater or several tubular heaters. Also, consider energy efficiency and discretion if necessary.

The main difference lies in their heat distribution method. A radiant heater, such as a tubular heater or an ultra-flat heater, heats objects and surfaces directly, providing gentle and constant warmth. A fan heater, on the other hand, warms the ambient air by circulating it, which allows for faster temperature rise but can also dry out the air more quickly, requiring humidity monitoring.

In general, I recommend maintaining a temperature between 20°C and 28°C for most indoor grows, with a slight drop of 2 to 5°C during the nighttime period. However, needs vary depending on the growth stage and plant type. Too low a temperature can slow growth, while too high a temperature can stress plants and promote diseases.

Installing a tubular heater is quite simple. I advise fixing it horizontally, ideally near the ground or under the plants, so that the heat rises naturally. Make sure there is enough space around it for good air circulation and avoid any direct contact with plants or substrate. A thermostat is essential for regulating its operation.

To determine the power, I take into account the volume of your grow box, the insulation of the room, and the ambient outdoor temperature. As a general rule, it is estimated that about 50 to 100 watts per cubic meter is needed, but this is an estimate. For a small grow box, a low-power ultra-flat heater may suffice, while a larger one will require a more powerful device or multiple heat sources.

The heating mat is primarily used to warm the substrate and promote seed germination or rooting of cuttings. It maintains a constant temperature at the root level, which is crucial for a good start for young plants. I usually place it under seedling trays or pots for a direct and localized effect.

What I often see as mistakes is not using a thermostat, which leads to temperature fluctuations and overconsumption. Also, avoid placing the heater too close to the plants, which can burn them, or leaving it running unsupervised. Another mistake is neglecting humidity: heating can dry out the air, so sometimes you need to compensate with a humidifier.

To regulate effectively, I connect my heater to a digital thermostat. I position the thermostat probe at the plant canopy level, where the temperature is most representative. I then set the desired temperature, and the thermostat takes care of turning the heater on or off to maintain this value. This is essential for climate stability and energy saving.
