About HPLED — click a question to see the answer.
Secret Jardin's HPLed is a state-of-the-art LED horticultural lighting module that I particularly appreciate. It is designed specifically for indoor cultivation, providing plants with optimized light intensity and spectrum for each stage of their development, from growth to flowering. It's a solution I often recommend for its reliability and efficiency.
In indoor cultivation, an HPLed lamp primarily serves to replace natural sunlight. Its role is crucial: it provides the light energy necessary for photosynthesis, the vital process that allows plants to develop. Thanks to its adapted spectrum, I find that it promotes vigorous growth and abundant flowering, which is essential for good yields. It is a central component of any indoor cultivation system.
To choose a horticultural LED lamp like the HPLed, I advise you to consider several criteria. First, the surface area of your growing space to determine the necessary power. Then, the light spectrum: some are more suitable for growth, others for flowering, and there are full-spectrum options. Finally, I always look at the quality of the components and the brand's reputation, such as Secret Jardin, which is a recognized player. I explain in more detail the importance of choosing the right equipment in this article about Secret Jardin.
The choice of your HPLed's power will primarily depend on the surface area of your growing space. As a general rule, I recommend aiming for approximately 30 to 50 watts per square foot (or 0.09 m²) for efficient cultivation. For a small tent, a low-power HPLed might suffice, while a larger area will require a more powerful model or multiple modules. It's important not to underestimate this point to ensure good light penetration.
The HPLed is designed to offer a light spectrum adapted to all phases, but it is possible to optimize. For the growth phase, I prefer a spectrum with a dominant blue, which promotes vegetative development. For flowering, I turn to a spectrum richer in red and orange, which stimulates the production of flowers and fruits. The beauty of the HPLed is that it often integrates a versatile full spectrum, which makes it very practical for growers who don't want to change their lighting. This is an aspect I really appreciate.
The main difference between HPLed and HPS lies in the lighting technology and their efficiency. HPS (High Pressure Sodium) are traditional discharge lamps, which produce a lot of heat and consume more energy for equivalent light output. The HPLed, on the other hand, uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which makes it much more energy-efficient, generates less heat, and offers a more precise and modulable light spectrum. In practice, I find that HPLeds have a longer lifespan and allow for better control of the growing environment.
Installing an HPLed lamp is generally quite simple. I always start by making sure the power supply is off. Then, I attach the HPLed using the provided hangers, ensuring it is stable and centered above my plants. I then adjust the height according to the manufacturer's recommendations and the development stage of my plants. Finally, I connect the power cable. I find this operation very intuitive, even for beginners. For complete installations, I invite you to consult examples in this article on Secret Jardin packs.
