STEP 12 · ACADEMY PROOVERVIEW OF THE COURSE

The harvest date decides what all the work of the previous months is worth. It is also the subject on which the most simple rules circulate, and on which research is the most cautious. This step gives you what is established, what is not, and how to decide anyway.

Trichomes and what they really tell you

Glandular trichomes are the structures that produce and store the compounds you care about. They develop through successive stages, from bulbous forms to capitate-stalked forms, and it is this last category that carries the bulk of production.

Three glandular structures of the same colour set on the same plant surface, of increasing size: a small, almost flat bulb, a wider rounded head still lying flat, then a large head held well above the surface by an elongated stalk. Open the illustration full size
What to look for: only the third one is carried on a stalk. It is this category, capitate-stalked, that carries the bulk of production. The other two exist, but they do not carry the same weight.

Observing them requires magnification. The glands measure between 40 and 110 micrometres in diameter, and their density is counted in dozens per square millimetre: with the naked eye, you see nothing usable. A strong loupe or a pocket microscope is part of the basic equipment, not of the accessories.

Two observation discs of the same size showing the same inflorescence surface: on the left, with the naked eye, a green blur in which nothing can be made out; on the right, under strong magnification, dozens of sharp stalked glands that can be counted one by one. Between the two, a folding pocket loupe. Open the illustration full size
What to look for: on the left, there is nothing to read. The glands measure a few dozen micrometres: without magnification, you are not reading maturity, you are guessing it. A strong loupe is part of the basic equipment.
Without sufficient magnification, you are not reading maturity: you are guessing.
